Of course you can always go for the traditional free standing shoe rack, but it won’t hurt to go for the more fashionable furniture either. There are a lot of options available out there that buying the beautiful ones doesn’t necessarily mean shelling out more cash.

How can storage boxes save you time? If you’ve tried looking for a particular item that is perhaps stuffed under a pile of papers or in a drawer, then you would know why. This scenario is so common that just about every household has experienced this. For example, trying to find your car keys, wallet or cell phone in the morning before heading to work.  Having all of these items stored in a nice box located in the same place every day makes it easy to grab and go!  Decorative storage boxes are perfect for keeping things together, particularly smaller items. You can keep pens, post-its, paperclips, jewelry and other items in these boxes. What’s even better is you can use them as a decoration for a room and guests would never know what trinkets you keep inside.

A few ways I use these boxes:

Wicker Box: To keep our car keys, wallets and cell phones in. They sit nicely on my countertop and look great.

Quilted Box: I use this to store photos I view frequently and other family heirlooms that I like to show off.

Leather Box: I have a really nice simple leather box with a lid that I keep all of our important mail in.  Some days I just don’t have the time to go through everything and so I keep it neatly in the box to go through later.

Another great thing is that these decorative boxes are relatively inexpensive. Now, of course you could find boxes that are a bit pricey and these are great if it is going to be a focal point for a room as well as provide storage. But if you are just using them for every day items and they will sit nicely on a counter then you can find really nice quality inexpensive boxes. There are a lot of materials used for storage boxes but one of my favorites is wicker. Wicker storage can last for a several years, and its look will never get old.  They are also versatile and will go with just about any home décor.

Some food can be kept in outside the fridge. And you must be aware of which food needs to be refrigerated.  Poultry, cooked seafood, and meat left over shouldn’t be left in room temperature for more than two hours. Doing so can spawn bacteria in the food, which is the cause of possible illness.

Store food safely. Food that can be left outside the fridge should be stored in food storage containers. These are clear plastic containers with lids that have several shapes and sizes for you to choose from. These are great for cereals, bread or cookies. Food storage containers can also be used for meat. Keep a certain size of meat per container, so you don’t have to thaw meat again when you don’t use the whole cut. You can also use these containers for any food that needs to be stored in the fridge, but you don’t use the lid. Foods such as leftovers are better left uncovered to prevent moisture from forming. You would also want to use shallow containers for faster cooling of the food.
Wrapped foods should be wrapped tightly. Try to take as much air as possible out of sealable bags, and choose the smallest container for your food if you are using plastic containers.

Refrain from crowding your fridge. Food, in a sense, needs room to breathe. A fridge with too many food and containers inside will block the air circulation, limiting the cooling process.

Know when to throw food out. Food may look and smell okay but it doesn’t mean that it’s still safe to eat. Chicken, pasta or tuna can be kept for up to a few days while fish, cooked or uncooked should be thrown out after two days. If you’re not sure about a certain food, especially if it’s starting to taste or smell funny, just throw it out right away.

A fantastic way to keep everything organized so that you know how long your food has been in there is to buy plastic food storage containers that you can write on.  If you cannot write on them, use a simple piece of clear or white tape and place it on the top of the lid.  Write what it is and the date you cooked it so that you can easily identify how long it has been in there.

We know that saving food, especially left over ones is not only a great way to save time but money as well.  Using good containers too store your food not only helps you keep an organized refrigerator, but it also helps ensures your safety.  We need to put the safety of our family first. The money you get to save on food would never be enough to pay off hospital bills. So always remember safety first, saving after.

DVD storage cabinets look like your ordinary cabinet, except that they have slots for your DVD and CD cases. These slots were intended for holding the cases in a standing position so that you could easily read their titles when you’re looking for a particular movie.

Just like an ordinary cabinet, there are a lot of designs and sizes for DVD storage cabinets too. There are the big ones, which could easily cater to a hundred or a thousand DVDs. Some just have the space inside for the DVDs, while some have extra spaces on the inside part of the door for extra storage. One of my favorites and one of the most popular is the slim-type, which could easily hold about fifty DVDs per level. It having usually three or four levels, it could hold up to two hundred DVDs without taking much of your room space. If you have a lot of DVDs, you can have several slim-type storage cabinets lined together. You might think that a single, big storage cabinet might be more practical but what’s great about having several slim-type is that you can store your DVDs per type of movie. One for horror, one for comedy and maybe another one for the most watched.

DVD cabinets come in a variety of materials, and the best ones are the ones made of hardwood. These are more reliable materials, and they’d be sure to keep your DVDs collection safe. You’d also want to consider the materials used for the lining of the cabinet. Some uses leather, while the more expensive ones use velvet. The latter one tends to be pricier, but there’s no need to push for one if your budget wouldn’t permit it. Any other DVD storage cabinet would do just as well.

Remember when choosing a storage cabinet that everything isn’t about looks its about home organization as well.  The most important thing to consider when choosing your storage cabinet is that it should serve its purpose, and that is keeping your DVDs safe and organized.

The truth is you need to determine first what your needs are regarding the closet Do you want a bigger closet? Are you looking to do a complete remodel and extend the space or do you prefer to simply revamp your current closet space? Are you looking for simple additions such as a shoe and purse organizer for closet? Once you’ve determined your overall goal, then you need to think about cost.
If budget is your issue, then stay away from customized organizers. Although they are excellent for addressing all of your closet needs, they’re very expensive. What you can do instead is buy a ready-made organizer, or make your own.

When it comes to organizers, or any furniture for that matter, what makes an item expensive is the material made for it. If you’ve noticed, an oak TV stand would cost more than a pine TV stand even though both have exactly the same design. This is because oak is stronger than pine, and that is what makes it cost more. So, for organizers, you can opt to go for a simple wire shelf, plastic or plywood. Although plywood can never be as wonderful as mahogany, it would radiate the same effect of nature—the same with any other wood. Plastic and wire shelves may be much simpler than wood, and they serve the same purpose, and they cost like $40 – a whole lot cheaper than a personalized closet which could cost hundreds if not thousands of dollars.

You can also create a closet organizer your self by using portable closet accessories. Enough with the drilling and the hammering. You can organize your closet by assembling storage boxes, shoe caddies and portable clothing racks into your closet. What’s important is that you arrange these things neatly into your closet, so it will look really organized.

If you really insist on buying a ready-made closet organizers but are a little low on the budget, then I suggest you try searching for items on sale. You can be a little friendlier to store attendants, and maybe get a little tip on when their next sale would be. You can also use the internet — search for organizers that are on sale or maybe look for someone who is selling their used organizer. Remember that the most important thing is to have a neat and tidy closet, rather than spend a lot of money on a beautiful and expensive organizer that serves the same purpose as an inexpensive one.

Style, Functionality or Both

You are obviously shopping for linen cabinets because you need more storage room, but it is important to decide whether you want functionality, style or both. As with any piece of furniture the more stylish the piece the more expensive it can be depending on the detail. So if your budget is low or you are simply looking for an extra storage cabinet then you may want to shop based on functionality. However, don’t think that just because you don’t have a big budget that you can’t find something that will look good. Linen cabinets have come a long way over the years varying from different wood finishes to their designs.

Size

Be sure to decide where the linen cabinet is going to go first because you will want to get a rough measurement of the area so you don’t buy one that is too big. You not only want to measure width but you want to measure height as well. I bought a small linen cabinet one time from target and while it looked like a good size in the store when I put it together at home it was very small and looked out of place. It served its purpose and stored the things I wanted it too like my hair dryer, flat iron and other hair products but it didn’t even go above my knee. I didn’t want to install it on the wall and so I just placed it on the floor. Had I taken measurements before I would have realized that while it was a good size for what I needed it would look a little odd in the designated area.

What Are You Storing?

The key to great organization is thinking about what it is you will be doing prior to doing it. This helps you get some of the what if’s and how much out of the way before hand. So when you decide on a linen cabinet you want to figure out what you will be storing and if this cabinet provides enough room. Will you be storing towels, linens, make-up, hair products, toilet paper and various other items? Will you need a linen cabinet with a cupboard to store additional medicine cabinet items? Think about what you are going to be organizing and where it will need to go.
